Community Update #12 COVID-19- IMPORTANT Government Travel Advisory and Actions for Travellers

On March 14, there were important updates with respect to actions people should take if they are currently abroad or have recently travelled outside Canada.

Travel: Any member of the York community currently outside Canada

The Government of Canada issued an update to the global travel advisory issued on March 13 urging Canadians abroad to return home while commercial flights are still available into Canada. Countries around the world also continue to escalate their travel restrictions in efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19. This advice is an escalation from the previous travel advisory, released on March 13, which had urged Canadians to cancel or postpone any non-essential travel.

If you are abroad, the Government of Canada strongly urges you to find which commercial options are still available to return to Canada and consider an earlier return than you may have planned as these options are becoming more limited. The University is also aware that there are international students abroad who may wish to return directly to their home country.

Travel disruptions identified by the Global Affairs Canada’s statement include:

“Airlines have cancelled flights. New restrictions may be imposed with little warning. Your travel plans may be severely disrupted and you may be forced to remain outside of Canada longer than expected.”

Please contact and the University can provide guidance and support for your travel arrangements.

International Students

The University is also aware that there are international students either at York or abroad who may wish to return directly to their home country.  Please contact for additional information.

Actions: Self Isolation if you have travelled

If you have travelled outside of Canada, including the United States, you should self-isolate and avoid contact with others for 14 days beginning with the last day of travel.

Further details can be found in our earlier community update here.

As the situation changes, we will continue to keep the York community informed. Please visit our dedicated website for the latest information.

Be well. Be safe and look out for one another.
